Martha Washington Must Die--Theme Song
Mark Lyons/Reggie Bruce
Aaaaww, an empty chair--where's Martha?---Uh-oh---what did you do? Was it a poison dart? A snake in her bed? Did something accidently fall on her head? What kind of homocidal schenanigans have you been up to? This is from our musical "Martha Washington Must Die". George Washington freed his slaves as a condition to run as the first President of the new Union. Slavery wasn't practiced and frowned upon in the north. But in the south? Well, that was a different story. And Martha's slaves?--well, it was in her will that they would have to wait until her passing. And when the slaves found out? Well,--ooooh-ooooh! and lol!...well...As our lyrics go: "We didn't choose to come, So now we've gotta change what you have done, So Martha, you'd better get ready to run!" This was officially released as a single on October 3rd, 2022. Had a lot of fun doing this one too. Africans are the only ethnic group that didn't come to America looking for a better life, or the American dream. Their slavery was horrific and a stain on our culture and nation. We decided to use humor to deal with a serious subject. Ala Mel Brooks and "Blazing Sadles" meets the founding fathers. Reggie brought this to the table, and originally the tempo was slower. I added a couple sections and had the idea to make it "Punk"--which adds a comedic feel, I think. So I sped up the tempo and I did the lyrics, which he approved of the following week. I hope you enjoy it!
